This 13-day private journey reveals Bhutan’s most sacred valleys and iconic trails, with time at six of the country’s finest luxury lodges. Begin in Paro with a guided walk along the Trans Bhutan Trail, before flying east to Bumthang for three nights at Amankora Bumthang, where highlights include the Bushman’s Trail and the legendary Kunzangdra Monastery. Continue west to Gangtey Lodge for two nights, with the chance to walk the Longtey Lomey Trail, explore the Gangtey Nature Trail, and visit the atmospheric Gangtey Shedra Buddhist College. This private journey begins and ends in Paro, Bhutan. Paro is accessible by direct flight from Bangkok, Kathmandu, Singapore, Dubai and select other international hubs. Your Journey Designer is happy to assist with connecting flights, and pre- or post-journey accommodation in Bangkok or Kathmandu.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

On arrival at Paro International Airport, you’ll be met for your private transfer to COMO Uma Paro, your accommodation for the night. After lunch at the lodge, meet your private guide for a gentle walk through the Paro Valley, beginning at Zuri Dzong with its panoramic views. Continue along a section of the famous Trans Bhutan Trail to Taa Dzong, home to Bhutan’s National Museum, before descending to Paro Dzong, set dramatically on the banks of the Paro Chu River. Return to the lodge for a free afternoon to relax by the pool, before a memorable dinner at the award-winning Bukhari Restaurant.

Day 2

After breakfast and check-out, meet your private driver for the transfer to Paro Airport for a short domestic flight to Bumthang. On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to Amankora Bumthang, your base for the next three nights. Settle in with lunch at the lodge before an afternoon at leisure – perhaps take a stroll through the scenic grounds or try your hand at Bhutanese darts or archery. Dinner is served this evening in the lodge’s dining room or alfresco in the courtyard.

Day 3

After breakfast, meet your private driver and guide for the transfer to the trailhead of the Bushman’s Trail. This scenic walk leads past hilltop lookouts across the valley, the newly built Zangdopelri – a symbolic paradise of Guru Rinpoche – and the peaceful Pema Choling Nunnery. You may choose to continue on to Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake), one of Bhutan’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. Return to Amankora Bumthang for lunch, with the afternoon free to relax. Dinner is enjoyed this evening in the lodge’s Dining Room or alfresco in the courtyard.

Day 4

After breakfast, meet your private driver and guide for the journey into the Tang Valley to begin today’s hike to the ancient Kunzangdra Monastery. Steeped in legend, the cliff on which it rests is said to resemble a bodhisattva, with locals believing only a being of extraordinary power could have built a temple in such a remote and elevated location. After exploring the temple grounds and taking in the dramatic scenery, return to Amankora Bumthang for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure, before dinner this evening at the lodge.

Day 5

After breakfast and check-out from Amankora Bumthang, meet your private driver and guide for the transfer to Longtey, the starting point of today’s Longtey Lomey Hike. Follow forested trails and wide open meadows to the peaceful Kumbu Hermitage and village, continuing on to Gangtey Monastery. Lunch is enjoyed along the trail before descending into the valley to arrive on foot at Gangtey Lodge, your home for the next two nights. Dinner is served this evening in the Main Lodge.

Day 6

After a wholesome breakfast at the lodge, meet your private driver and guide for a walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, one of the most tranquil and scenic routes in the Phobjikha Valley. From October to February, you may be fortunate to witness the arrival of rare black-necked cranes, which migrate here from Tibet each winter. Following your walk, visit the historic Gangtey Goenpa Monastery before returning to the lodge for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure to relax, with the option to take a gentle stroll to Gangtey Shedra Buddhist College this evening to witness the monks’ evening prayer service. Dinner is served back at the lodge.

Day 7

After breakfast and check-out, journey towards Punakha with a stop at Lawala Pass, where you’ll have the special opportunity to hang your own Buddhist prayer flags – a meaningful tradition said to carry blessings of peace and good fortune on the wind. Continue on to the Temple of the Divine Madman, a charming site believed to bestow fertility and protection upon visitors. After enjoying lunch in a local restaurant, travel onward to &Beyond Punakha River Lodge, your base for the next two nights. This evening, relax with scenic sunset drinks by the river before a Bhutanese-inspired dinner at the lodge.

Day 8

After breakfast, meet your private guide for a scenic walk along the Mo Chhu River to Khamsum Chorten. Following time at the temple to explore, descend through terraced rice fields to meet your driver for a short transfer to Punakha’s longest suspension bridge, where you will continue on foot to the impressive Punakha Dzong, a striking fortress on the riverbank. Return to &Beyond Punakha River Lodge for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. This evening, dine at the lodge’s restaurant or choose one of the alfresco settings overlooking the valley.

Day 9

After a final breakfast at the lodge, check out and meet your private driver and guide for the transfer back to Dochula Pass. From here, set out on one of Bhutan’s most picturesque day hikes – the trail to Lungchutse Temple. Take in sweeping Himalayan views before descending through a rural village and temple. A picnic lunch is enjoyed along the way before continuing your journey to Six Senses Thimphu, your home for the night. This evening, dine at the lodge’s signature Namkha Restaurant before settling in for the night.

Day 10

After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely morning – we recommend a short self-guided loop walk from the hotel to a scenic lookout with sweeping views of the Thimphu Valley. On your return, check out and meet your driver for a visit to the towering Golden Buddha at Buddha Point, which rises 52 metres above the city. Continue on to Paro and check in at Amankora Paro, your base for the next three nights. After lunch at the lodge, the afternoon is free to stroll through the surrounding forest or try your hand at archery. Dinner is served this evening in the lodge’s atmospheric Dining Room.

Day 11

After a hearty breakfast at Amankora Paro, meet your private driver and guide for the transfer to the trailhead for the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Perched 900 metres above the Paro Valley, this dramatic site is a true highlight of any journey to Bhutan. At the monastery, you may wish to join a short guided meditation with the resident monks and light a traditional butter lamp before beginning your descent. A traditional BBQ lunch awaits at a cosy log cabin, followed by a relaxing afternoon back at the lodge – perhaps with a restorative spa treatment. This evening, dine at Amankora’s elegant restaurant.

Day 12

After breakfast, meet your private driver and guide for a scenic drive to Chele La Pass, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan. From here, hike to Kila Goenpa, a peaceful cliffside nunnery nestled in pine forest. Enjoy lunch nearby before returning to Amankora Paro for an afternoon at leisure. This evening, dine in the lodge’s Dining Room or alfresco on the firelit terrace, with views towards Drukgyel Dzong and the snow-capped peak of Mt Jhomolhari.

Day 13

Enjoy a final breakfast at Amankora Paro, perhaps beginning your day with a morning yoga session in the lodge’s studio. If time allows, take a short self-guided walk to the nearby Drukgyel Dzong, a beautifully restored fortress at the head of the valley. Later, meet your driver for your private transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward journey.

This journey operates year-round, though some adjustments may be necessary in January and February due to winter conditions and July and August due to monsoon season. For the best experience, we recommend booking between March and June or September and December.
