Courtyard KAI Okuhida
A truly unique and authentic Japanese experience, from the intimate dining experience to the cultural activities

Property Overview

KAI Okuhida is tucked away in the Okuhida region of the Japanese Alps and is thoughtfully designed to resemble a traditional hot spring village, rather than a traditional hotel. The ryokan is spread across three main buildings and a separate activity pavilion, with pathways connecting everything. One of the things that makes it truly unique is the little public road that runs right through the middle of the property. This was done on purpose so locals would always feel welcome, and it gives the place a very open, lived-in atmosphere.

Rooms are warm and calming, with tatami floors, natural timbers and soft lighting. Some rooms come with their own private indoor onsen, which is a real treat, especially after a day out walking. Guests can also enjoy the public bathhouse, which has separate indoor baths for men and women, plus a lovely open-air onsen surrounded by mountain air.

Dining is an intimate experience at KAI Okuhida. Guests are shown to a private dining booth, and you’re looked after by your own dedicated host for the evening. It’s a very personal experience, and the dishes are beautifully presented with ingredients sourced locally.

During the day, the ryokan offers a handful of simple but fun cultural activities. There’s a woodcraft workshop (which was very popular during my stay), morning Japanese exercise, and even a foot onsen experience - simple but enjoyable ways to experience local culture.

What we loved

The private onsen in my room was amazing. The water was always the perfect temperature, and it became the most relaxing part of each day, especially after hiking. Having that level of privacy and comfort made the stay feel extra special.

The hikes nearby were another favourite. During my stay, I explored both Mount Norikura and Mount Shinhotaka via the Shinhotaka Ropeway. Shinhotaka was challenging and fun, with peaceful trails surrounded by tall forest trees. Mount Norikura was a real surprise - I highly recommend adding the extra night at KAI Okuhida to enjoy a full day on this mountain. Both experiences were unforgettable.

Coming back to the ryokan after a big day on the trails and slipping straight into the onsen is one of the memories that has stayed with me most.

What surprised us?

The dining experience completely exceeded my expectations. This was my first time dining in a private booth in Japan, and the personalised service was above and beyond. Having one dedicated host looking after me for the entire evening made it feel incredibly special. The food itself was presented with such precision, using seasonal ingredients from the region. The unique way they served the dessert was a standout and one of those little things that stays with you.

I was also surprised by how enjoyable the cultural activities were, even though they’re conducted in Japanese. They’re easy to follow and a lot of fun. And yes -eating a soft-boiled egg cooked in the nearby onsen water was as crazy and memorable as it sounds!

Recommended experiences

I definitely recommend joining the wood carving workshop if you can secure a spot, and trying the foot onsen for a simple but relaxing cultural ritual.

For hikers or anyone who enjoys the outdoors, Mount Norikura is perfect for a full day in the mountains, the Shinhotaka Ropeway and hike offers beautiful views and peaceful forest walking, or Kamikochi is also within easy reach if you prefer gentler valley trails.
