Eclipse Expeditions have truly created one of the most spectacular ways to visit the Kimberley
Property Overview
Cruising the Kimberley Coast with Eclipse Expeditions is one of the most exclusive and unforgettable ways to experience this remote part of Australia. What makes it truly special is how tailored the journey feels — every day is shaped around guests’ interests and abilities, whether that means venturing out on challenging hikes, fishing for barramundi, or simply soaking up the beauty of hidden waterfalls and ancient rock art.

A truly intimate experience, the boat sleeps just eight people across four queen staterooms, all air conditioned with private ensuites. There are three crew members and two expedition vessels. On board features include the light-filled open-plan indoor saloon, front and rear alfresco spaces and a rooftop lounge to kick back and take in the spectacular sunsets.

The experience balances adventure with indulgence, and the dining on board is an absolute standout. With every dish thoughtfully crafted, from freshly caught seafood turned into ceviche to decadent desserts, meals were as memorable as the landscapes. This combination of personalised exploration, seamless service, and world-class food makes Eclipse Expeditions a remarkable way to see the Kimberley.
What I loved
Eclipse Expeditions have created something truly special. Their passion and knowledge shine through every part of the experience. From the moment I was collected from the hotel and whisked onto a private charter flight, I knew this would be a trip unlike any other. The helicopter ride over Mitchell Falls, landing on a secluded beach before boarding the catamaran, set the tone for what was to come.

I loved how the days struck a balance between adventure and relaxation. Mornings were filled with hikes, fishing trips, and cultural encounters, while afternoons gave us time to rest, play cards, or simply soak up the beauty from the deck. Some evenings we set out again at sunset, while others were spent enjoying conversation and laughter on board.

My favourite memories include catching the biggest fish of my life (and even a shark!), going mud crabbing, and hiking to incredible waterfalls and ancient rock art sites that felt like ours alone. It was an intimate, private exploration of the Kimberley that left me in awe each day.

What surprised me
The seamlessness of the experience exceeded all expectations. Guests never had to think about the logistics, from day packs to fishing gear to refreshments, everything was handled by the team. The dining was a highlight in itself. Our chef, Will, was so passionate and creative, preparing everything from ceviche made with the day’s catch to perfectly cooked duck and crème brûlée. Each meal felt like it belonged in a top restaurant, only made better by the Kimberley backdrop.

The crew, Tess, Jackson, and Will, were just as much a part of the experience. They joined us on excursions, shared stories and knowledge, and went above and beyond in small but memorable ways, like remembering each guest’s favourite drink, offering to launder clothes, and patiently teaching fishing techniques. Their genuine enthusiasm made the trip feel deeply personal.

One standout moment was at Kings Cascade. We arrived at the same time as a larger ship group, but while they crowded into tenders of 25 or more people, we enjoyed the falls privately, first hiking and swimming, then returning later in the day to experience the thrill of going right under the falls. Having that special moment without the crowds really showed the difference of travelling with Eclipse.

Recommended experiences
Every activity is included, and the daily itinerary is tailored to each group. On our trip, most guests were keen on fishing and hiking, so we enjoyed advanced hikes to remote waterholes and countless fishing excursions until the freezer was overflowing with fresh catch. The beauty of Eclipse is that the group can split into smaller parties, with one tender heading out fishing while another sets off hiking, so everyone gets the experience they are after.

Because of the adventurous nature of Kimberley cruising and the presence of crocodiles and sharks, these trips are best suited to adults with a good level of mobility. For those who love wilderness, fishing, and active exploration, it is a dream come true.

I recommend staying at least one night in Broome before the cruise. It is a wonderful way to ease into the trip, enjoy the town’s restaurants, and start your Kimberley journey feeling relaxed. Staying an extra night after the cruise is also worthwhile. While it is possible to connect with same-day flights, having time to unwind, enjoy a proper shower, and reflect on the experience makes the transition home smoother.

For those wanting to see more of the Kimberley, combining a cruise with a stay at El Questro or joining our 5 Day Kimberley Walk is highly recommended. Adding visits to the Bungle Bungles, Horizontal Falls, Montgomery Reef, and Mitchell Falls creates a complete Kimberley bucket list journey.
What’s Nearby?
Many guests round out their Eclipse Kimberley experience by staying in luxury lodges before or after the cruise. El Questro Homestead in the East Kimberley is a standout, offering wilderness comfort, amazing scenery and a great base for exploring gorges, waterfalls and nearby walks.

Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa in Broome is another top choice. Right on Broome’s famous surf beach, it’s ideal for indulging in resort-style amenities, spa treatments, beachfront views, and relaxing after the adventure.

For a more remote outback vibe, Bullo River Station provides wide open landscapes and immersive outback hospitality.

If you want a city-based luxury stop, The Mangrove Hotel in Broome offers stylish rooms with views over Roebuck Bay and is perfect for transitioning into or out of the more remote parts of the journey.
