Hiking in Nepal and Bhutan: How to prepare

We recommend preparing 2–3 months in advance for hiking in Nepal or Bhutan, gradually building stamina with longer walks, uneven terrain, and stairs. Some treks reach higher altitudes, but your itinerary will include time to acclimatise.

To hike in Nepal or Bhutan, you’ll need to prepare based on the trek’s difficulty. As most journeys include the option of a few harder hikes, we would recommend starting your training at least 2-3 months in advance to ensure you get the most out of your experience. Begin with shorter walks and gradually increase your duration and difficulty over time, including some walking/hiking off well-formed paths and incorporating some stairs. If you have never hiked before, you may wish to start preparing sooner.

Both countries have some hikes at higher altitude which will require some time for acclimatisation (something which will be incorporated into your itinerary). Walk into Luxury's journeys incorporate mid-altitude lodge based walks for the most part, which are lower risk than the higher altitude multiday treks. You can read more about altitude in Bhutan and Nepal, and our acclimatisation tips here.
